Because of this, they will be able to offer more tailored advice regarding the best treatment options.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if you need to treat the wound and can\u2019t &#8211; or don\u2019t want to &#8211; reach out to their vet, some human antibiotic ointments may be safe to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll take a look at some of the most common human antibiotic ointments in the next few sections.  Then, we&#8217;ll discuss whether they are safe to use on a cat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of which ointment you decide to try, it is important to make sure that your cat can\u2019t lick the ointment off.&nbsp; Doing so could be dangerous, plus she could open the wound back up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To stop her from being able to reach the wound, you\u2019ll need to use an Elizabethan collar.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterinarypracticenews.com\/no-more-cone-of-shame-the-e-collar-has-evolved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">E-collars or cones of shame<\/a> are other names for an Elizabethan collar. They go around the cat\u2019s neck and head.  This keeps the cat from being able to lick or bite at the other areas of their body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cat Wound Care\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qOf-OqZoSYE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"is-it-ok-to-put-neosporin-on-a-cat\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it OK to put Neosporin on a cat?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as you may wonder whether it is<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkiesandwhiskers.com\/uk\/can-i-give-my-dog-calpol\/\">safe to give your pet Calpol<\/a><\/strong>, you might also want to know whether you can put Neosporin on their wound.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodrx.com\/neosporin\/what-is#:~:text=Neosporin%2C%20sometimes%20known%20as%20%22triple,those%20might%20require%20medical%20attention.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">what Neosporin is<\/a> and the different ingredients found in it.  This will help us better understand whether it is safe to use on a cat\u2019s wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neosporin is a brand name for a triple antibiotic ointment from Johnson &amp; Johnson.&nbsp; As you may suspect after hearing that it is a triple antibiotic ointment, three different antibiotic ointments are in Neosporin:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/mtm\/neomycin.html#:~:text=Neomycin%20is%20an%20antibiotic%20that,listed%20in%20this%20medication%20guide.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">neomycin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drugs\/2\/drug-14270\/bacitracin-topical\/details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bacitracin<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polymyxin_B#:~:text=Polymyxin%20B%2C%20sold%20under%20the,useful%20for%20Gram%20positive%20infections.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">polymyxin B<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Neosporin could potentially be used topically safely on a cat\u2019s wound, you will have to be absolutely certain that your cat won\u2019t be able to lick at it and ingest any of the ointment.&nbsp; According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petpoisonhelpline.com\/poison\/antibiotic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Animal Poison Control Center, Neosporin is a toxic medication for animals<\/a>.&nbsp; It should not be ingested and could lead to severe side effects or even death if it is ingested.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sagecenters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Triple_HC-combined.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">some cats can be allergic to polymyxin B<\/a>, one of the three ointments used to make Neosporin.&nbsp; If your cat is allergic to polymyxin B, they could have an allergic reaction.
