Training your new puppy can sometimes be a bit of a nightmare. Sure, we love them no matter what, but it can be so frustrating walking into your living room and seeing (or smelling) that your dog has not quite mastered the idea of peeing outside just yet. The last thing you want is your home smelling like dog pee so you are going to need to get that dog pee out of your carpet and rid the smell from your house. But how do you do it?

Well, there are a few things you can do to get dog pee out of your carpet. Here, we will be looking at all the best methods for getting dog pee out of carpet flooring so you can use the best one for you.

Fresh Pee Stains

There are two different types of urine stains that can affect your carpet – fresh or dried. If you happen to catch your dog in the act, then you should start immediately to clean it up so the smell has less time to set in.

Immediately cover the wet patch of pee with a thick layer of paper towels.

If your dog has peed on a rug or an area of the carpet you can lift up and get underneath, it is also a good idea to place paper towels underneath the area as well.

Use newspapers to cover the paper towels and stand on top of the area.

This will help squeeze the urine out of the carpet to be soaked in by the paper towels. This method helps the paper soak up the urine more quickly, saving you precious time.

After a few minutes, check and see how saturated the paper towels are – you may need to replace them if they are soaking wet.

This all depends on how much your dog peed and how much paper towel you used before. You will want to keep going until the paper towels are not soaking up any more pee.

Remove all the paper and rinse the area of carpet out with cool water. Repeat the paper towel method again until your towels are refusing to soak up any more liquid.

These paper towels will most likely smell awful. But this is a good sign – it means you are drawing out as much pee from the carpet as possible.

To get between the fibers of the carpet, try blotting up the water with towels.

If your carpet is dry but there is still a faint pee odor, then here is how you remove that bad smell.

You will need some baking soda from your kitchen. If you don’t have any baking soda at hand, you can purchase some at your local store easily. Or through the link below:

Spread a thin yet even layer across the damp spot where you have been cleaning. Leave the baking soda overnight. Vacuum it up in the morning. Repeat the process until the smell is gone and your carpet looks as good as new.

Another alternative method if you want to use something stronger is to make your own solution using vinegar instead. In a clean spray bottle, dilute one cup of distilled white vinegar with a cup of water.

Mix in 2 teaspoons of baking soda, shake it up until it is all well mixed. Then spray on the pee stain. Leave it to sit for a few minutes before blotting the area with towels until it is clean.

And that is how you get a fresh pee stain out of your carpet!

Dried Pee Stains

Dried Pee Stains

So what about if you come home and you find a dried out pee stain on your carpet?

Well, you will have to wet the area again to be able to lift the urine out of the carpet and start cleaning.

Although this makes removing the dried stain more difficult than cleaning up a fresh one, it is not impossible. It just takes a little more elbow grease.

Start off by rinsing the dried patch with some plain cool water. If you have a wet-dry vacuum cleaner, you can use this appliance to keep saturating and vacuuming up the urine until the area is clean.

If you don’t, then keep wetting and blotting the pee stain repeatedly using clean towels and water. Keep repeating this process until the carpet is clean. This may take some time to do, but hang in there.

You might be tempted to use a steam cleaner now that I have mentioned wet-dry vacuum cleaners. But this is a very bad idea.

Steam cleaners are very hot. The heat will help set the odor in and could potentially make the stain permanent. So if you do have a steam cleaner – do not be tempted to pick it up and use it.

If the smell is still prevalent, you can use baking soda or vinegar techniques to try and lift the smell.

Remember that the affected area should be thoroughly cleaned. It should be lightly damp, not soaking or dry and still full of pee.

You can also use an enzymatic cleanser (a solution that comes in a spray bottle that helps break down stains to remove odor). There are many available in store or online specifically designed to help remove dog pee.

And there you go!

If the pee stain has already dried by the time you notice it, you will have to wet the area again with water. Otherwise you cannot remove the urine from that area.

Overall, the process of removing dog pee from carpet material is a time-consuming one. But it is fairly basic and simple.

As long as you have the right cleaning equipment – plenty of paper towels, cool water and baking soda – you should be able to return your carpet to its normal state.
